Vehicle Keeps Blowing Fuses When Headlights Turned on with Trailer Connected
Question:
I have a 2004 Toyota Highlander I connected the factory 4 pin flat electrical harness to the trailer plug in the wiring harness. My trailer has LED lights all new wiring included. My directionals and stop lights work fine. My issue occurs when I turn on the headlights. The factory 10amp fuse blows out, I replaced this with a 15 and then a 25 amp fuse with the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're likely on the right track. If your fuses keep blowing out, this is a sign that there is a short somewhere on the system-most likely on the running light circuit. Since you're saying that the trailer has all new wiring-if this was something you installed I would recommend re-checking your wiring to make sure that there isn't an exposed wire (cut, damaged or otherwise) touching the frame of the trailer. The ground wire on the trailer should be checked to make sure it is secured to a paint and debris free surface. If this is a brand new trailer, go ahead and skip that part and move on to the next step, since the issue is going to be occuring on the vehicle.
The most likely cause of a vehicle short is the 4 way connector; make sure that the 4 way connection is free from corrosion, dirt and debris. If there are any signs of corrosion on the 4 way, you'll want to replace it with either # C56107 (with factory towing package) or # 118413 (without factory towing package). If the 4 way is in good condition, you'll want to check the wiring behind the harness to make sure that there are not any cut or damaged wires that are touching the vehicle frame- replace anything that is damaged as needed. You'll also want to check the ground wires on the vehicle harness to make sure that it is grounded to a rust and paint free surface.
If you've gone through these steps and continue to get blown fuses, please let me know and I can continue to troubleshoot this issue with you. I've also linked one of our help articles on troubleshooting a 4 way wiring connection that you may find helpful.
