Should All Brake Assemblies on Triple Axle Trailer Face Forward

Question:

i have a trailer in my shop with something i have never seen before, the first and third axle trailer brakes are for forward braking and the second axle is backwards, i.e. works only in reverse. is this correct or should i swap it over so they all face forward?

That is definitely an interesting setup and I have to believe that it's unintentional. Most likely the owner (or previous owner) replaced the brakes on just that axle and simply installed them backwards on accident. It's not terribly uncommon because it's not too hard to do if you aren't paying attention to the brake assembly orientation.

I definitely recommend swapping the brakes on that middle axle so that they face forward like the rest. There shouldn't really be a scenario where a trailer is going fast enough in reverse that brakes installed in this manner would be needed.
