How to Carry a Kayak on a 1999 Plymouth Voyager

Question:

I have the minivan named above and I have a 10 ft Pelican kayak. I want to make sure what I order is right for my van and that the items are the only required parts to put my kayak on my minivan to take to the lake.

The best way to carry your 10 foot Pelican kayak on your 1999 Plymouth Voyager is to add a roof rack and use a roof mounted kayak carrier. Your Voyager came with one of three roof options that will affect your roof rack possibilities.

If your Voyager came with raised roof side rails that run front to back, then I recommend the Rhino-Rack Aero Roof Rack which consists of the following parts:

Vortex crossbars # RRVA118B-2 in black or # RRVA118S-2 in silver
Legs # RRSX100

If your Voyager came with flush mounted side rails that run front to back, then I recommend the Inno Square Bar Roof Rack which consists of the following parts:

Square Crossbars # INB117
Crossbar Feet # INXP
Custom Fit Kit # INTR501

If your van has a naked roof, meaning there are no side rails, then I recommend Thule Roof Rack which consists of:

53" Crossbars # TH711420
Traverse Feet # TH480R
Custom Fit Kit # THKIT1043

These are moderately priced roof rack options that will give you the best bang for your buck. The last item you will need is a kayak carrier. You can set the Kayak directly on the crossbars, but that could create scratching or marring of the kayak. My favorite type of carrier is a J-Style carrier like the Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier, # S510. This will cradle your kayak in an easy to load and unload position.

If ease of use isn't much of a concern, then I atleast recommend using foam pads on your crossbars like the Malone Deluxe Foam Blocks, # MPG152. This comes with tie-downs.
