Is a Friction Sway Control Like Part # 83660 Compatible with Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems

Question:

Hi, I have a 6,200lb travel trailer and pull it with a Ford Expedition. We just recently went on a trip to Florida and I still felt some bad sway when trucks and traffic would pass me. Since this is a weight distribution and sway control system can adding the friction sway controls be helpful? The dealer recommended adding these but I wanted to ask if this would be compatible with the equalizer hitch. Thanks

A friction sway control like the # 83660 you referenced is not compatible with the Equal-i-zer weight distribution system. The weight distribution head that the Equal-i-zer unit uses offers no attachment point for the vehicle-side sway control ball (see photo). This being said, there are steps you can take to ensure your system is providing maximum sway resistance.

Since I believe in trying the easy fix first, try increasing the tongue weight of your travel trailer. Any gear stored in the trailer that can be moved forward of the trailer axle will help make the travel trailer a bit more nose heavy, and therefore more resistant to sway.

If increasing the trailer tongue weight does not improve the swaying condition, review the set-up procedure used to initially adjust the Equal-i-zer system (I have provided a link to the install instructions, in case you no longer have them handy). Adding adjusting washers or raising the L-brackets will apply more downward force on the spring bars and provide additional sway resistance.

Ensuring that your trailer suspension is in good repair and that your tires are properly inflated to the maximum psi listed on the tire sidewall is also an important step in minimizing trailer sway.

I have also linked to an installation video that you might find helpful.
