Comparing etrailer.com and Draw-Tite Class III for Using Bike Rack on 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

Hi, Im looking at the etrailer and draw tite hitch for my 2016 subaru outback 3.6R and it looks like the etrailer brand is a nicer product. Which do you recommend. Im not towing, I need hitch for a three bike Kuat rack. Thank you

Both the ettrailer.com # e98847 and Draw-Tite # 75673 Class III Trailer Hitches that you mentioned are great options for your 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon, however I do recommend the etrailer.com model for a couple of reasons.

These are both custom hitches that will mount to the same area on the Outback's frame rails but the etrailer.com # e98847 is going to stick out just a tad further towards the rear of the bumper than the Draw-Tite. This ends up providing a perfect combination of allowing for easy access to the hitch pin hole to attach your bike rack, while also still being recessed enough that it doesn't bruise any unsuspecting shins. The Draw-Tite model is recessed a few inches further back, which can turn out to be a pain when trying to bend down and secure accessories like your rack.

I also just think the etrailer.com hitch looks nicer as a result of its round crosstube (as opposed to the square Draw-Tite) and unique matte black finish. This finish gives it a really nice rugged appearance that's also less prone to scratches compared to the standard shine of a powder black coat like what you see on the Draw-Tite unit.

Both feature a matching 400 pound tongue weight capacity (more than enough for your 3-bike Kuat carrier) and allow for a simple bolt-on installation. I have attached an installation video on the etrailer.com hitch below that you can also use for reference.

Will this etrailer model require additional support when using a bike rack or cargo carrier? It looks like all of the Curt products have that disclaimer.

That stabilizing strap isn't needed on the etrailer Trailer Hitch # e98847. Curt did use to have this requirement for many of their hitches but they've actually changed this somewhat recently - it's no longer a requirement on their products either.
