Is Replacing the Surge Brake Coupler Required When Converting to EOH Brakes On a Boat Trailer
Question:
Im converting my boat trailer brakes from surge to EOH using Hydrastar HBA16 with breakaway kit I purchased from etrailer. I read an earlier thread that recommended replacing or bolting/welding the tongue coupler since the surge is no longer needed. I see there is a Titan fixed coupler $120 that would bolt up nicely using the same mounting holes i have on my existing Titan surge coupler. My question is it absolutely necessary to replace the coupler or fixing the surge tongue? I replaced the two surge dampers a couple years ago and they look fine and the damper mounting pins are fine. The surging trailer coupler should not affect the performance of the EOH Hydrastar nor the electrical connections.

When converting from a surge braking system to an EOH system, you will want to have a fixed coupler. If you were to use the surge coupler as is without immobilizing, it can lead to rapid wear on internal parts because of the unassisted movement. Welding/bolting a surge coupler to immobilize it is not recommended either. This can damage the structural integrity of the coupler, leading to catastrophic failure. I recommend a fixed coupler like the Titan Zinc-Plated Straight-Tongue Coupler part # T4853100. I have also provided a link with our coupler selection.
Since your converting to an EOH brake system, you will need a brake controller if you don't already have one. I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160. It will work with 1 to 3 axles and is a proportional brake controller so will provide you with a smooth braking action when compared to the time delayed style controllers.
