Wiring to Flat Tow A 2020 Jeep Wrangler behind a motorhome

Question:

I'm looking for what parts are needed as far as wiring goes for flat towing. The wiring part is kinda confusing. What specific wiring do I need to flat tow my 2020 Jeep Wrangler behind my motor home?

The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most popular vehicles to flat tow because they are easy to set up to pull behind your motorhome and are fun to drive once you get where you're going. Tow bar wiring allows your vehicle to have functioning stop, turn, and tail lights while being towed.

To make sure your Jeep has functioning tail lights when towed, a custom-fit plug-in harness can be installed to use the existing lights, the Jeep can be hardwired to use the existing tail lights, or a universal lighting kit can be used to add additional lights to your Jeep specifically for towing. Regarding wiring needed to flat tow, the following should take care of your needs.

For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies of the towed vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV.

The purpose of a brake light relay kit is to prevent your towed car's brake signal from overriding the turn signal that comes from your RV. When your towed vehicle is properly wired and connected to your RV, its indicator lights will illuminate as you engage the turn signals in your RV. A Brake Relay Kit like # RM-88400 will be needed if you’re installing a supplemental towed vehicle braking system that pushes or pulls the brake pedal. Since these are required in most states it's definitely

The SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 provides automatic, proportional braking that never has to be removed, replaced, or reset. The DUO activates when your RV's brake lights go on and an inertia sensor in the towed car detects deceleration. Under the seat is the easiest place to install it but if there is something in the way such as an under seat storage box then it can be installed elsewhere.

I have included a helpful link to our articles on flat towing for you. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual for more specific information on flat towing your vehicle.
