when I install the replacement , my steps are now extended, do I need to power up the motor to insure that the drive gear is in the door open position or is it preset from the factory.

When installing the Replacement Motor for Lippert Electric Coach Step # LC301695 you don't need to have your steps or the gear for the motor in any specific location. The motor and steps will complete a whole cycle and basically align itself. I reached out to my contact at Lippert who confirmed this.
