Is The Draw-Tite Hitch Receiver Lock BD580412 Actually Secure

Question:

If so, it seems that not only is this a safety risk if the pin should break over time but its a security risk as a thief only needs to drill out this pin the release the lock. Does the pin seen on the outer face of the lock hold the inner locking mechanism?

The end of the pin of the Draw-Tite Hitch Receiver Lock part # BD580412 that has the black cover holds the locking mechanism. It would be possible for a thief to drill put the lock if they wanted to. The lock is a theft deterrent but not theft proof. We have not had any customer complaints about it breaking over time.

If the tension ball is what bothers you about the design, I recommend to use etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock part # e98881 which is considered a bit more secure because of it's screw and lock design. I have attached a video for your reference.
