Using a Hitch Adapter to Carry Bike Rack in Class I Receiver on 2012 VW GTI

Question:

Im interested in using this hitch on my 2012 VW GTI. I will only be using a bike rack on it. I will need to use a converter piece as my rack is a 2. Im concerned about the auxiliary stabilizing straps that the instructions state are necessary to use with this hitch. Can you explain this and comment on whether or not this hitch would work for my intention? Thanks.

Although using an adapter like # HTAD will indeed allow the use of a bike rack with a 2 inch shank in a Class I receiver like the # C11000, using the adapter will lower the tongue weight capacity (maximum amount of weight that can be suspended from the receiver) of the receiver by 50 percent, from 200 lbs to 100 lbs. This would mean that the weight of your bike rack plus the bikes placed upon it could not exceed 100 lbs. Using an adapter places the load further away from the receiver, thus placing more leverage on the receiver and possibly causing damage. Because of this, the hitch manufacturers state that any bike rack placed in a Class I receiver can carry no more than two bikes.

A better option would be to replace your current bike rack for one that is designed for use with a Class I receiver. The Swagman Titan, # S63400 is a bargain priced rack with features typically found on more expensive racks, like an integrated locking cable and an anti-rattle hitch pin. A locking hitch pin, # S64029 is also available.

For womens bikes or bikes with sharply angled top tubes or step-through frames, using a frame adapter like part # 64005 is recommended. The adapter spans the distance between the seat post and the handle bar gooseneck, and provides a level attachment point to the bike rack so the bike is not carried at an angle.

To retain warranty coverage, the stabilizing strap, # 18050 is required for use with a non-trailer load like a
bike rack or cargo carrier. The strap will prevent the rack from placing too much leverage on the receiver.

I have provided a link to a video that shows how the strap is used. I have also linked you to the install instructions for the hitch I recommended.
