Does 1996 Jeep Cherokee with Factory Tow Package Need a Trailer Tail Light Converter
Question:
I have a 1996 jeep Cherokee that I bought new and it included the tow package, ie tow bar, transmission cooler and wiring. I have a round plug at the tow location. I am buying a trailer and expecting that I will be able to plug the trailer into the round plug n the jeep and will have brake lights, etc. is that correct or will I need this part also?

If the trailer connector you currently have is factory installed, you should be good to go. The signals going to that connector should already be converted, so you will not need # 119178KIT, which would be needed if the vehicle was never equipped with a trailer connector. It sounds as if you have a 7-way trailer connector, like part # PK11893 that has 6 blade-type pins with a contact in the center.
You can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the connector to ensure it is functional. Activate the left turn signal and test the pin in the 9:00 position. The tester should blink along with the turn signal. With your tester on the same pin, pressing the brake pedal should also light the tester. Activate the right turn, and test the pin in the 3:00 position, the tester should light up. It should also light when the brake is pressed. Next, turn on the headlights and test the pin in the 11:00 position, the tester should light. The pin in the 1:00 position provides 12-volts for any trailer mounted accessories that might need it, if connected it should light your tester. The 5:00 pin is the output voltage for a brake controller and the 7:00 pin is for the ground. I will provide a photo showing the function of each pin. Due to the age of the vehicle, you might find that the connector is corroded and in need of replacement.
If you should find that your Cherokee has a different trailer connector, we have a variety of adapters (see link) that can be used to convert your existing connector to work with your trailer.
