Carrying A 100lb Trail Bike On A Cross-Country Trip With A 2013 Ford Fusion SE
Question:
Im travelling across the country and was wanting to bring my small 100lb. trail bike with me. I was wanting to go the small motorcycle carrier/back basket route with tie downs but Im unsure if I should do that or get a towing trailer instead. Dont have a hitch yet so trying to figure out if I should go the 1 1/4inch route or the 2inch route, and also if using a trailer is better for a trail bike rather than a carrier.

Your best option is going to be a hitch mounted motorcycle carrier. The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7239 is the only hitch providing a 2" receiver you could then pair with the etrailer Motorcycle Carrier for 2" Hitches # e98873 that is used for much heavier bikes but may be ideal for a cross country road trip.
The 200lbs tongue weight rating for this hitch applies when towing. I did not see in the owners manual a reference to the maximum towing capacity but if the sole purpose is to carry the bike, this setup will be sufficient.
