Does a 2007 Toyota RAV4 Towing a 2000 lb Boat Need a Transmission Cooler

Question:

I would like to install a trailer hitch on my 2007 Rav4 V6. I would be pulling a boat, about 2000lb loaded. Do I need a transmission cooler?

The Curt Class III receiver, part # 13509 is highly rated and would be a great choice for your Rav4.

According to my research, the 2007 V6 is rated for 3500 lbs of towing when properly equipped. I would recommend checking your owners manual to confirm your towing capacity.

To complete your towing system, you might need the following:

Trailer wiring harness with 4-pole trailer connector # 118412
Ball mount, # D-4
Hitch Pin and Clip item # PC3.
2 inch trailer ball, # 19247
1-7/8 trailer ball, # 19260

A transmission cooler like the Derale # D13503 is an inexpensive insurance policy for your transmission. A cooler will keep your transmission fluid cooled to the ideal operating range, between 160-200 degrees. The ideal mounting location for a cooler would be directly behind the grille. The # D13503 cooler measures 11 inches wide by 8-3/4 tall by 7/8 of an inch thick, you will want to check the mounting location to ensure there is enough room for the cooler.

I will link you to an install video showing a cooler being installed. Although the vehicle shown is different, the procedure for your RAV4 would be similar. I have also linked you to some transmission cooler FAQ articles that you might find helpful.
