How To Convert a 4-Way On a 2004 Ford Explorer To a 7-Way
Question:
2004 Ford Explorer with factory tow pkg. But only a class 2 receiver and a 4way flat plug. I already asked if I should upgraded to a class 3 receiver as I think that’s the way to go. So I would want to go from a 4way to a 7way. Was wondering if there was any harness that was plug and play as it’s nice to have it simple as possible.

I do have a simple option for you to convert the 4-way trailer connector you have now to a 7-way trailer connector but it will not be entirely plug and play as that is not an option. The only thing you will need for this is the Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole part # 37185 unless the trailer has brakes in which case you will need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller part # ETBC7.
The above two kits both will install in the same way. The two 4-ways plug into one another and then you will need to ground the white wire. If the trailer has a battery that you want to charge while towing then the black wire will be run to the vehicle's battery and if the trailer has brakes the blue wire will need to be run to the brake controller inside the cab. The latter kit comes with all the wires you need to run the battery charge line and brake output.
If you don't already have a brake controller I like the Brake EVN # TK63VR.
