Recommended Tire Chains for 2017 Toyota Highlander

Question:

Reading a few replies on snow chains for the highlander 17 hybrid and cross reading the manual, I am confused. The manual states a max thickness of 3mm on the inner side of the wheel, the ones recommended are 3.7 mm Item # TC2324. The ones I want to buy are used on the factory tires 245/60 R18 and I would really dislike damaging anything on my car. Personally, I do think 3mm is a bit flimsy for this kind of car, Seeing images of these chains working on the car, How do the 3mm relate to the 3.7 used on the chains? Furthermore, do you happen to have some higher quality alternative that can hold a solid Winter drive on a fully packed car without issues? Thanks a lot!

I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2017 Toyota Highlander and did see where it states that the side chain shouldn't be any larger than 3 mm in diameter. I definitely recommend adhering to this guideline as using a thicker chain could cause damage due to the limited wheel well clearance on your Highlander and it wouldn't be covered under warranty.

The only true tire chains we have available for the 245/60R18 tires on your Highlander that meet this requirement is the Konig Premium Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # TH2004565767. Because of the unique design on these chains they actually don't require any internal clearance and they offer the quickest, easiest install process on the market.You simply have to place the chain on top of the tire, attach to the wheel nut/bolt, and drive off. The chains tighten by themselves as you drive.

The only other option for your tires would be cable chains like the Glacier # PW2029C, which allow for the needed clearance on your Highlander but lack the strength of traditional chains. These types of traction devices work well for occasional use but likely won't last more than a season.
