Weight Distribution System For A 2017 Chevrolet Colorado Pulling A 3,300lb Camper
Question:
is there a problem with purchasing a hitch rated for a high capacity than is actually necessary? Does it add any extra safety or sway control benefits? Or is it a problem? Colorado diesel and 3300lb camper dry. We may haul and additional 1000lbs with us, the dogs and our “stuff”. 1000 lbs would be in the high side. Considering e2 1200.

The main issue using a weight distribution hitch rated for a higher capacity than needed like the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-1200 is that it can cause a stiff ride. It does not increase towing capacity because that is always limited by your lowest rated component.
Generally you want to use tongue weight to drive the selection of a weight distribution system. Tongue weight is the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Your total tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight which sounds like 4,300lbs or tongue weight of 645lbs. Per the owners manual the maximum trailer weight to tow with the Colorado is 7,000lbs for the 6 cylinder model.
I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA94-00-1000 as a more suitable option for your situation. You will also need a hitch ball with a 1-1/4" diameter like the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 1-1/4" # 63836.
Included is an installation video for a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado.
