Should Weight Distribution be Used for Towing 3,500 lb Trailer with 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Question:

I am considering getting a weight distribution hitch but am not sure if it is really worth it. I have a 2001 Ford Sport Trac pickup 2WD rated for 5,040# pulling a 6x10 enclosed SA cargo trailer with a total weight of between 2,700 and 3,500#. The rear sags 2-3 when hooked up. I normally use a 3/4 rise shank to keep the trailer about level. Would something like part # C17330 be worth it? Also, what is the difference between a round bar WD hitch an the Trunnion bar hitches? Thanks,

A weight distribution (WD) system is recommended anytime the trailer weighs at least half of the weight of the tow vehicle. Since this is the case with your 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and your SA cargo trailer I highly recommend using a WD system.

The WD system, when properly rated like the Curt # C17330 you referenced, takes the tongue weight of the loaded trailer and distributes it between all of the axles involved in the towing setup. This means that your whole towing setup will be level (or very near level) so that all of the tires of your Sport Trac are touching the ground for traction plus it helps with suspension longevity.

With the Curt system you mentioned you'll also need a hitch ball like the 2" # A-90 or the 2-5/16" # 19286.

Something else to consider is a sway-control system like # 17200 to help reduce the effects of crosswinds or when a larger vehicle passes you and you get trailer sway. This is a great product to help with that but the only downfall is that you have to unhook it to back your trailer up. There are other options like the Husky Center Line # HT32216 which integrate the sway control and allow you to back up.

The difference between round and trunnion bar systems is that round bars are more traditional and more cost-effective but they sit lower to the ground to trunnion is the preferred way to go.
