Is Brake Controller Needed to Activate Trailer Brakes if it Has Surge Brakes
Question:
I have a 2006 set 4 runner. It has a 7 pin plug receptacle built in. I just bought a 2015 a liner camper. Gross weigh ~1850lbs. The camper look like it has a surge brake. I am not familiar with electrical brakes at all. Question: Do I have them on the trailer? What should I look for? Do i need a controller and what does that do? The plug on the camper fits nicely into the receptacle on by 4runner? Help please, thanks in advance.

Since you have surge brakes on your trailer and the trailer wiring is connecting between the two just fine you'd be totally set most likely. Only thing I would check is try to back the trailer up and see if the brakes lock up. If not, you are totally fine. If they do you need to activate the reverse light circuit of your 7-way. Your trailer would have a reverse lockout solenoid that activates when the vehicle is in reverse to allow the trailer to backup without the brakes locking up.
