If your 2017 Dodge Journey isn't yet equipped with any kind of connector you will need to start with a 4-Way. For this I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118536 if the vehicle has LED tail lights or the T-One # 118567 if it has standard incandescents. Either option will plug right into existing ports behind the rear tail lights for installation.

Once the 4-Way is in place I recommend using the Wiring Kit # ETBC7L to upgrade it to a 7-Way. The harness will plug right into the 4-Way and the kit includes the necessary components to activate the 12V pin on the connector to provide the needed maintenance charge for your trailer battery.

Then for the brake controller itself I highly recommend the Curt Echo # C51180. This is a really unique controller that simply gets plugged into the mentioned 7-Way at the rear of your Journey and pairs to your smart phone via Bluetooth. Since your phone is what is used to adjust any settings or activate the manual override the install process is greatly simplified compared to most other traditional units. This also allows you to maintain the existing appearance of your Journey's cab since you don't need to mount an additional component under the dash.

The Echo will automatically send back power to the trailer brakes in correspondence to your vehicle's deceleration. I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
