SportRack Pop-Up Camper Roof Rack Installation

Question:

My roof channel is to the side of the roof, so the screws would not be going through them. When I drill and screw through the roof top close to the edge, will the screws be going into a wood frame? 1978 Coachman popup

The screws included with the installation hardware for the SportRack Pop-Up Camper # SR1020 are self-tapping screws. Self-tapping screws are actually designed to have a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screws, even though they're not often used in this fashion. Drilling the pilot hole makes a huge difference in helping get the self tapping screw started typically. I've tried it both ways and without a pilot hole it's not impossible but not nearly as easy as with.

It's tough to say exactly how the SportRack # SR1020 is going to install on each specific pop-up camper model, but it would be best to have it secured into that wood frame if you can't secure it into the roof channel. That way, you'll have something with a little bit of backing for added strength.
