Trailer Hitch, Brake Controller, and Wiring Recommendation for 2019 Subaru Ascent

Question:

The Ascent manual specifically states the factory 4 pin connector is not compatible for electric brakes. What is required for this application? Basically I am trying to decide on if I should get the factory hitch or go with the system outlined in your previous response.

Since you don't have a trailer hitch or wiring on your 2019 Subaru Ascent, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 76253 for the strongest hitch and then the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118790 which has a higher amp rating than the alternative options. It is an easy install and then I recommend using the # ETBC7L and the Curt Echo # C51180 for a brake controller and wiring option that doesn't require any splicing into your factory wiring. The 7-way style of trailer wiring is needed to activate trailer brakes.

Factory options are going to be much more expensive and the Subaru hitches typically have odd dimensions which make fitting accessories too difficult.

Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
