Bike Rack Recommendation for 2019 BMW X3 and 2018 Lexus NX 300 for Heavier Bikes

Question:

Hi, I have a 2019 BMW X3 and a 2018 Lexus NX 300 in my garage and I am looking for a trunk bike rack for either of my two cars that can carry two adult bikes that weigh 40lbs each and a kids bike that weighs 20lbs. Do I absolutely need a hitch bike rack? Thanks

Since you need a weight capacity of 40 lbs per bike you do have to go with a hitch mounted option as all of the trunk options are limited by a 35 lb per bike capacity. For brand new vehicles like yours you really wouldn't want a trunk rack touching the paint of the vehicle anyway.

So you'll need a hitch on both vehicle. For that you'd want the Curt # C13337 for the 2018 Lexus NX 300 and part # 76226 for the 2019 BMW X3 and that's taken care of.

Then for a 3 bike rack we have the RockyMounts SplitRail LS 3 Bike Platform Rack # RKY11404-3 which has a 45 lb per bike capacity that would work really well. It only touches the bikes at the tires too which means no contact on delicate frame materials or pain.
