Does Truck's Payload Capacity Dictate Amount of Trailer Pin Weight It Can Tow

Question:

Hi,im looking at building a gooseneck motorsort hauler at around 10000 pounds. I know its reccomended to have around 20 pin weight. Due to my 2500 only having around 2000 pound payload this is not legally achievable. Would there be any foreseeable issues just having 10 pin weight like a tag trailer ?

So payload for a truck is actually a different figure than the pin weight capacity of the truck when towing a gooseneck trailer because payload factors in the weight capacity of the truck bed which is typically sheet metal and then pin weight capacity is instead the capacity of a hitch attached directly to the truck frame. So with that in mind you need the standard pin weight percent of 20% to tow your trailer safely.
