When Installing ZCI Trailer Wiring Harness to Wire Have to Run to Vehicle Battery
Question:
Wondering if I can run the power connection for the 119250KIT via an accessory power plug instead of hardwiring to the battery? In essence, if the hot wire and ground wire go thru a cigarette lighter plug-type connection, couldnt I just plug in the trailer module when its needed, and otherwise its not even connected to power. I have a 3 foot coiled wire connector that would make it super easy to do. Circuit protection/fuses from the 119250KIT would still protect the system, the only change is the fact that I only plug in power to trailer lights when needed. This is for a 2015 Audi Q5 that did not have any factory connections for towing. My jet ski trailer uses LED lights, so theres minimal power drawn. THANKS!

While I understand the temptation to run the power wire of the trailer wiring kit part # 119250KIT to an easier to access source than the battery that defeats the purpose of the power wire to a certain extent. The reason this runs to the battery is to allow you to totally bypass the vehicle wiring when powering the trailer wiring and only power it straight from the battery eliminating any risk of causing a short on the vehicle. So we have to recommend you install it per the instructions to the battery.
