Troubleshooting Prodigy P3 Brake Controller that Blows Truck Fuse When Connected

Question:

I will abbreviate what I have discovered and or concluded: 1. P3 Brake Controller installed operating perfectly. 2. About a week ago post July 5th noticed the controller did not light up at ignition with trailer not connected as usual. 3. Checked the 30 amp fuse for the controller. Blown. 4. Replaced the fuse, started truck, fuse blown. 5. Purchased another fuse, repeated problem, fuse blown. 6. Disconnected P3 from truck, replaced fuse, did not blow. Reconnect P3, re fuse after checking, POP, fuse blows. Truck not running. 7. Using blunt ended pigtail on controller, controller lights up when terminals are touched. Wondering: IF controller active during boat launch and plug got wet could this damage the controller. I will get another fuse and plug in the old Reese controller and see if the fuse blows. Any Advice at this point? I have been talking to Jaminson C. Thanks

It's very possible the P3 # 90195 that you have was damaged and now has a short that fries the fuse your truck has for a brake controller. This would be a rare occasion for this to happen as the P3 is normally really reliable, but based on what you've tried already I'd say it's pretty likely at this point.

I think connecting a different controller like you mentioned would be a great way to hone in on where the problem is. I'd try that to see what happens and then go from there.

I did attach a help article with more info on troubleshooting brake controllers for you to check out as well.
