What To Consider When Sitting Height of Fifth Wheel Hitch

Question:

My question is I have a 2018 Ram 2500 with factory puck system. I bought a curt q25 puck hitch for that truck. I have 65 in from ground to over hang on fifth wheel when level. And 57.5 in to top of bed rails. How can I tell if I have the hitch set in the right holes for height? Plus when I pull the unit I get a lot of forward and back motions. Do I need to raise the hitch? Thanks

Expert Reply:

So the sweet spot for fifth wheel hitch height is the setting that allows the trailer to sit as level as possible and then also allows at least 6 inches between the bed rails and the trailer overhang. Right now that distance you have (based on the measurements you listed) is 8-1/2 inches. So if your trailer is totally level you are doing really well. If you need to bring the nose down you can around 2-1/2 inches and you'd be good.

The head and jaw designs of the Curt hitches are known to allow a bit more movement than other brands so that's what's going on with the movement you are experiencing. The B and W Companion part # BWRVK3670 instead would be much quieter.
