Since your 2010 Toyota Tacoma doesn't have the factory tow package but does already have the needed 7-Way connector at the rear bumper I strongly recommend the Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. This is going to offer the easiest installation while also providing you with responsive and safe braking during travel.
This unique controller installs by simply plugging into a 7-Way connector and pairing to your smart phone via Bluetooth. Unlike most other controllers it doesn't require any kind of wiring in the truck itself and because your phone is what is used to adjust any settings or activate the manual override, you don't have to add a separate device inside the cab. For a truck like yours that doesn't already have a factory plug behind the dash ready for a standard brake controller install this is a perfect option.
The only thing you will need to make sure of is that the existing 7-Way has the 12V pin active, which is the pin at the 1 o'clock position. If it's not already active this is easy enough to do by simply running a length of 10 gauge wiring like # 10-1-1 from this pin to the battery under the hood via a circuit breaker like # 9510.
The Echo when installed will automatically activate the electric brakes on your trailer in correspondence to the truck's deceleration (the harder you brake the more power it sends back). Even if you were to for some reason lose the Bluetooth connection on your phone the controller continues to work seamlessly (you just wouldn't have access to settings or the manual override in this scenario).
I have attached a video demonstration on this controller that you can check out as well.
