Bike Rack Recommendation For Use at the Back of a 5th Wheel Trailer

Question:

I have had problems with racks failing in less than a year riding behind my fifth wheel. Is this rack tough enough to take 10,000 miles a year? It is a real pain to be in middle of nowhere and the rack welds have broken.

I believe that the racks you have been using are failing because they are not rated for use behind a trailer or RV. Only certain bike racks are rated for this application. I have included a link to the bike racks that you can use behind your 5th wheel.

The issue is that bike racks that fold up/tilt down or do not have a single piece shaft cannot withstand the added stress associated with being at the back of a trailer. There is added stress because the rear of a 5th wheel trailer is further from the axle than it would be on a passenger vehicle.

For a platform style rack that will work at the back of a 5th wheel, a popular option is # S44FR. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to a video review of this bike rack for you.

I recommend a single arm hanging rack, # S64400. The mast (upright bar) of this bike rack is one piece of metal that covers 90 degrees where the bike cradles are. This design is much sturdier than fold racks and there are less connection points all together on the rack which means less of a chance of something failing.
