Should Timbren or SumoSpring Suspension Enhancement be Used for Towing with a 2014 Ford F-150

Question:

Hi. I have 2014 f150 5.0 super crew 4x4. I have a camper travel trailer 26 feet and weights about 6750 pounds. I use a weight distribution hitch. Would Timbren or sumo work best for this. Trying to help with bounce and sway. Thanks

I personally recommend using the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-117-47 for your 2014 Ford F-150 4x4 because we have received a lot of feedback from customers stating that the SumoSprings provide a much more comfortable ride than the Timbren alternative. These helper springs are rated for up to 1,500 lbs but please note that any suspension enhancement system is only designed to support a suspension that is in good working order and it will not increase your weight carrying capacity.

With all of that being said, if you are experiencing significant bounce and sway from your trailer it would be worth checking to make sure you have a weight distribution (WD) system that is rated properly. For a properly rated system system you want one with a Tongue Weight (TW) range that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your towing setup falls in the middle of. To find the TTW of your towing setup you will need to add the TW of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer, along with the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. One way to do this is using a tongue-weight scale like the # e99044 to find this measurement. Keep in mind that a properly loaded trailer will have a TW that is 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer.

If your trailer weighs in at 6,750 lbs when loaded then that means your trailer TW should be between 675 lbs - 1,012 lbs. Should your TTW fall outside of the range of your WD system then I recommend using the Strait-Line # RP66084 which has a TW range of 600 lbs - 1,200 lbs and has one of the leading sway control systems on the market. All you need to complete this system is a hitch ball like the 2" # A-90 or the 2-5/16" # 19286.
