Replacement Slipper Springs for 1982 Cox Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a 1982 Cox Trailer for my 13 Boston Whaler 35hp motor. Im looking to replace the slipper springs. My existing springs are 3 leaf and the leafs are 1/4inch thick, otherwise they are the same dimensions as your e29SR. My existing axle is 1 1/4inch diameter. Do you think this will work for a replacement or will the new springs be too heavy duty and cause a harsh ride?

Selecting new slipper springs for your 1982 Cox boat trailer's suspension means matching them up to your trailer's axle weight rating and also matching their width and length dimensions. The actual number of leaves does not always matter because different grades of steel can mean fewer or more leaves in a spring for it to reach is rated weight capacity.

I think you are on target with the 1800-lbs axle rating for the spring # e29SR you referenced since your 1-1/4-inch diameter axle is not likely to be rated for more than this weight. This spring has a width of 1-3/4-inches and a length of 30-inches. Please refer to the linked image. I also linked all of our 1-3/4-inch wide slipper springs. The lowest weight rating on these is for 1000-lb axles, spring # SP-177275, which is a 2-leaf spring with overall length of 24-5/8-inches.

I included an article on slipper spring suspensions which includes lots of helpful information on slipper spring suspensions.
