Can Brake Controller Tap Into 4-Way Harness for Brake Light Signal
Question:
Hi there, I installed this Tekonsha custom fit in my 2013 mitsubishi outlander. Is it possible to tap into the brake light signal on the 4 pole as a trigger for a brake controller? Thank you

When installing a trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 that you were looking at you will need to connect its red wire to the cold side of the brake light switch behind the brake pedal of your Mitsubishi Outlander. You will not be able to connect it to the 4-Way from the Tekonsha Harness # 118518 for a couple of reasons.
This signal simply won't be reliable or strong enough for use with a brake controller and it might lead to a blown fuse on the harness. Also keep in mind that the circuits on a standard 4-Way like this are combined, meaning the turn signal and stop light signal are sent along the same wire. If you were to tap into the brake light signal on the 4-Way the brake controller would also send power back to the trailer's brakes when applying the left or right turn signal.
For a brake controller that doesn't require this particular connection I recommend taking a look at the Curt Echo # C51180. This brake controller only requires that you convert your existing 4-Way to a 7-Way (which would also be required for the P2 and other traditional units) that has the 12V pin activated. To do this all you need is the Wiring Kit # ETBC7L, which includes the new connector and all the necessary wiring.
The Curt Echo then simply plugs right into the 7-Way connector itself and pairs up to your smart phone via Bluetooth. It does not require any connections under the brake pedal or inside the cab at all. Your phone is what is used to adjust any settings or activate the manual override so nothing needs to be installed inside the vehicle. It will automatically send power back to the trailer brakes in proportion to your deceleration.
I have attached a video demonstration that you can check out as well.
