Weight Distribution System and a Chevy Blazer

Question:

My Blazer is rated to pull 5,000 lbs. The trailer Im interested in weighs 3,000 and the car in the trailer weighs about 2,200 lbs. So I am 200 lbs over. Someone told me if I use a weight distribution hitch it actually increases the tow capacity on the tow vehicle. Is this true? Can I still safely tow even though Im only 200 lbs over?

We do not recommend towing beyond your towing system capacity even if just 200 pounds. Weight distribution systems are used to distribute the load you are towing between all the axles and therefore you can tow more. However, your vehicle (and hitch) need to be rated for this. For example, most Class III hitches are rated to tow 3,500 lbs on their own but up to 5,000 lbs with a weight distribution system. You will need to find out if your Blazer is rated to tow more than 5,000 with a weight distribution system. You can check your owner manual and with your local dealer to find this out. If the Blazer is not rated for any more than 5,000 lbs you should not be towing this trailer and car.
