Determining if Curt 2" Bumper Mount Hitch Will Fit 2001 Dodge Dakota

Question:

Would this work on my 2001 dodge Dakota extended cab truck to pull a very lightweight trailer or is there a different brand that would work better?

The Curt 2" Trailer Hitch # E-3S that you referenced is more of a universal application so you will just want to check the existing bolt holes on your Dodge Dakota's step bumper to see if they match the mounting holes on this hitch. If the holes on your truck are spaced apart by 8-3/4 inches (on center) then the hitch will work perfectly as a simple bolt-on application.

If you find that the holes don't match up then the hitch can still be installed but you will need to drill some new holes into the factory step plate on the bumper. I have attached a dimensional diagram and the complete installation manual that you can also check out.

The hitch has a 5,000 pound capacity so it's certainly capable of pulling a lightweight trailer. You will just want to check your copy of the owner's manual to verify the bumper capacity on your Dakota.

Another good option is a custom frame mount hitch like the excellent Curt Class III # C13280. This hitch is designed specifically for your truck so it will line up to existing holes in the frame for a no drill installation. It features a 5,000 pound towing capacity and is made right here in the USA.

I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.
