Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2009 Toyota Prius and Day6 Electric Bike
Question:
I have a 2009 prius and just bought an electric bike. Besides weighing about #50 without the seat and battery which are easy to take off its extra long as it is a crank forward bike, a day6 dream bike. I was told I should get a tray type rack because of the weight but that will stick out too far I think. The motor is on the front hub so not advised to remove very often. Im not keen on pulling a trailer for the bike but could if I have to. What do you think. Thanks

It looks like the best option for carrying the bike on your 2009 Toyota Prius is to use a trailer hitch, like # 24808, that you have referenced, and then use a platform bike rack. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to a video installation for the hitch for you.
We have one bike rack that will fit the Class I hitch for the Prius and carry a bike that has a long wheelbase. Take a look at the Swagman XC-Extended Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, # S64650-EXT. It has an 80 pound capacity (but I still recommend removing as much weight as possible to ease strain on the hitch), and will accept a bike with a wheel base up to 68 inches.
You will also want to consult the vehicle owners manual to determine if you can use the vehicle for carrying a bike on a trailer hitch.
