Hopkins Agility Brake Controller Shows SC Error Code on a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD

Question:

HM47294 has worked fine for years. On a haul it started flashing SC. But only when I demanded 20 or more. If I use the button and go to 99 you feel it try for just a split second and then nothing and you get the SC. Been using daily. This is out of the blue. Its on an 03 2500 HD Silverado.

An SC error message would indicate a short circuit situation. This could be a problem with the brake controller, the wiring on the vehicle or trailer, or the brake magnets.

To test the brake controller, sever the blue wire behind the controller leaving enough length to reconnect it later. Then, use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 if needed on the blue wire. Apply the manual override on full. It should show a full, constant signal. If it does not, then there is a problem with the brake controller, and it will need to be replaced.

If it works as, it should, reconnect the blue wire and make sure all of the other connections are intact and try new connections if you need to.

Next, move on back to the vehicle and trailer connectors. Check and remove any dirt or corrosion inside the connectors and in the backs of the connectors where the wires attach. Corrosion can cause a short to ground or a short to the brake output circuit.

On the trailer side connector, make sure the main ground is attached to a clean and corrosion free bare metal surface. Then move on to the brake magnets. First check the wiring and make sure that the power wires are intact with no exposed wiring. An exposed wire cut touch the metal frame of the trailer and cause a short.

Then check that the grounds are attached to clean and corrosion free metal surfaces. You can also visually inspect the magnets for wear. If you can see the windings coming through, the magnets will need to be replaced. To further test the magnets, you will need a multimeter like # PT89ZR if needed. I have included a link to an FAQ article that will help you test the magnets.
