The 4-pole and 5-pole trailer connector formats are compatible with each other since each of their pin/wire/function assignments are the same except for the extra circuit on the 5-pole. In other words if you plug together 5-pole vehicle and 4-pole trailer connectors all of the trailer lighting functions on the 4-pole will operate; just the one extra circuit/function will not reach the trailer. Some times the molded plastic housings can need trimming in order to fit well.
Usually the extra pin/wire/circuit on a 5-pole is used to convey the reverse light signal for the trailer's electric lockout on a surge type brake actuator.
When someone needs to convert a vehicle from 4-pole to 5-pole wiring all that is needed is an adapter # 20036 which includes an extra wire that can connect to the reverse light circuit on the vehicle.
