For your Demco Autoslide 5th wheel hitch like # DM8550035 on your 2017 Ram 3500, the height position for your hitch to give you bed rail clearance will depend on your pin box height. Even on the lowest setting as you can see in the attached video, the head will be almost level with the side bed rails yet could fit under a tonneau if desired. A couple inches under the rails for the highest part of the hitch will be accommodated by the pin box so you won't have any issue with rail clearance. If you don't have a tonneau you can raise that hitch above the bed rails as needed to help your trailer tow level and give you greater rail clearances.

You simply want to make sure that when connected to your trailer, the trailer rides level and there is 6 inches clearance between the top of your rails and the bottom of your trailer like shown in the attached photo.
