Recommendation for Weight Distribution on 2002 GMC Envoy Towing a Jayco 198RD Trailer

To determine the correct weight distribution system on your 2002 GMC Envoy towing a Jayco 198RD, you will need to use the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the trailer. You will also want to make sure that your existing hitch on your Envoy is compatible with a weight distribution system.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need a system that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight loaded and ready to tow, plus the weight of any gear in your 2002 GMC Envoy, behind the rear axle. I am including a link to a FAQ page on weight distribution.

I looked up a 2012 Jayco 198RD trailer and the GVWR capacity was 6,500 lbs. With the gross trailer weight rating of your trailer at 6,500 lbs, the tongue weight range of 10 to15 per cent would be 650 lbs to 975 lbs. For that tongue weight range I would recommend the Reese Weight Distribution System, part # RP66542. This system has a tongue weight range of 600 to 1,200 lbs and a gross towing capacity of 12,000 lbs. I am including a link to the installation instructions on the # RP66542 system.

If you are concerned about trailer sway, I would recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System with Sway Control, part # RP66084. This system will include the Dual-Cam sway control. This sway control is a proactive system that will stop trailer sway before it has a chance to start.

The last part you will need is the hitch ball. Depending on your trailer coupler size, I would recommend either the Curt 2 Inch Hitch Ball, part # A-90, or the Tow Ready 2-5/16 Inch Hitch Ball, part # 19286.
