Recommended Trailer Hitch for Bike Rack on 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon
Question:
I have a 2018 4 cylinder Subaru outback with a 2.5 liter engine and would like to install a hitch to accommodate a swing bike rack. What size and class hitch can I install? It appears that Subaru recommends 1.25inch class 1 however I have read that some have installed 2inch class 3 being careful not to exceed the recommended towing limits. What do you recommend? Thanks

For your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon I definitely recommend going with a Class III trailer hitch that features a 2 inch receiver, specifically the etrailer.com # E98847. This is because a 2 inch receiver opens the door to many more compatible accessories when compared to a smaller 1-1/4 inch receiver that's on Class I and II hitches. It's also very likely that your existing swing-away bike rack or the one you have your eye on is only compatible with 2 inch receivers.
As you mentioned in your question as long as you remain under the Outback's tongue weight capacity, which should be listed in the owner's manual, there's no issue at all with installing a hitch with weight capacities that exceed the vehicle's.
The etrailer.com Class III Trailer Hitch # E98847 is perfect for use with a bike rack or other hitch-mounted accessory because its receiver position in relation to the rear bumper allows for much easier mounting compared to other models with a more hidden design. Its unique matte black finish also provides a nice rugged look while also preventing any scratches or scuffs.
I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.
If you don't yet have a bike rack I highly recommend the Thule Apex Swing # TH9027XT because of its large cradle spacing that prevents bike-to-bike contact and integrated anti-rattle pin that eliminates movement inside the hitch receiver for a quiet, stable ride. A bike and hitch lock are also included to help protect your investments.
