Can Trailer Hitch Hardware be Greased to Resist Corrosion for a 2012 Mazda 3 Hatchback

Question:

Is it a good/bad idea to apply a light coat of grease to the carriage bolts before attaching the hitch? I want to prevent corrosion of the threads but dont want the nuts to come loose over time. Draw-Tite 24843 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback Intended use: hitch-mount bike rack

The Draw-Tite trailer hitch, # 24843, uses lock washers and conical tooth washers that prevent the nuts from backing out. I would say that the use of grease is not prohibited by the instructions (see link) but that there are some other options.

You can use blue Loctite, # LT37643. The blue version will allow the hardware to be removed (if ever needed) but will also protect the hardware from corrosion.

The problem with grease is that it can cause other particles of dirt and things to get stuck to it and that can make the grease course and abrasive like sandpaper.
