From the research I did, only the 4 wheel drive models fitted with full-time four mode 4 wheel drive systems with a transfer switch are flat towable. Make sure to consult the owners manual for the proper towing procedure for your 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara.

If you find that your model can be flat towed, you will need 5 items: base plates, tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking.

Base Plates

There are several base plate options available for your vehicle. I have included a link to them for you to view. I recommend going with the Roadmaster XL base plates, # 1011-3. These plates have removable draw bars that make the base plates virtually invisible when not installed.

Tow Bar

For a compatible tow bar that fits XL base plates, the most popular option is the Roadmaster Falcon 2, # RM-520. This tow bar has a 6,000 pound capacity and it stores on the RV instead of the front of the vehicle. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to a video review for you.

Safety Cables

For safety cables, I recommend going with the coiled cables # RM-643. These cables also have a 6,000 pound capacity and the coiled design helps to keep the cables from touching the ground.

Lighting

There are several possible options for lighting. What I recommend as the best solution that is more permanent and at the same time does not require cutting into the vehicle wiring is to use a bulb and socket kit, # RM-155. This kit puts separate bulbs in the tail light housing of the vehicle and they are operating by connecting to the RV trailer wiring harness.

Supplemental Braking

Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on both vehicles.
