How To Test To See If a Tekonsha Brake Controller Is Working Properly
Question:
I purchased a used vehicle with a brake controller already installed. My controller looks like a Tekonsha control. The only information I have is Cequent embossed on the body and a sticker that says Cequent #000042189. I am looking for set up information and directions for testing the brake operation of my Sprotsman Sportster toy hauler.

If you can send me a photo of the brake controller, I may be able to obtain a copy of the owner's manual for you but I don't have any reference to that number. However, if all you are wanting to do is make sure everything is working properly then this is really not needed. What you will want to do is turn the power settings up to max, usually with a knob or buttons on the exterior of the unit. Once you have power at the max settings have a friend apply the manual override which is usually a bar or button on the exterior of the unit and then test the 1 o'clock pin on the 7-way. If you get 12 volts then you are good to go. If not you need to check your wiring. The red wire is for the stop light switch, the black wire is for 12 volt power, the blue wire is for brake output, and the white wire is a ground.
If you have verified that you have 12 volts at the trailer connector then take a step back to the axle and you should hear a faint humming noise as well. The easiest way to see if everything is working correctly would be to just take the trailer for a quick spin around the block.
