Why Is a Trailer Hitch for a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Rated Higher If Used with Weight Distribution
Question:
I noticed the hitch is rated at 5000lbs with standard hitch but 7500lbs with a weight distribution hitch. Why is this? I am planning on towing a camper with a GVW of 5800lbs using a weight distribution hitch. This will work right?

For starters, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13065 is not a confirmed fit for a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The correct Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver for this vehicle is part # C13182. However, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75699 because of its hidden design (see photo).
The reason that a trailer hitch can be rated for more weight when used with a weight distribution system is because this system will take some of the tongue weight off of the trailer hitch and then transfer that towards the front axle of the vehicle.
If you don't already have a weight distribution system in mind, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution part # FA92-00-0800 with the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball part # 63840. The Fastway e2 is one of the best performing systems on the market for the money and it has integrated sway control.
