Steadi-Flex vs Strait-Line Weight Distribution for a Dump Trailer with Varying Weight
Question:
Hi, I have a dump trailer whose tongue weight varies from 300 to 900 lbs depending on how much I am hauling in it. I also routinely have things in back of the van, so total tongue weight varies from 600 to 1200 lbs. I am considering two weight distribution systems that should do the job: 1. Reese Steadi-Flex 12k RP66560 2. Reese Strait-Line 12k RP66074 My assumption is that the Strait-Line would be better because when I load up the dump trailer at a vendor, I can simply adjust the chains take in a link or two to achieve the right amount of weight distribution. Whereas the Steadi-Flex would require me to unbolt and adjust the L-Brackets attached to the trailer. Am I correct in assuming that the weight distribution hitch will need to be adjusted when the trailer is loaded vs unloaded? And am I correct in assuming that this adjustment will be easier with the Strait-Line?

Yes, you will need to adjust your weight distribution (WD) system depending on how much total tongue weight you have. If you have a system that is rated too high then your towing setup will be too stiff.
Out of the Steadi-Flex # RP66560 and the Strait-Line # RP66074 you are correct that the Strait-Line will be the easier of the 2 to adjust. They both have similar head adjustment options but when it comes to the arms it is much easier to adjust chain length and the bolts on the dual cams than it is to unbolt the L-Brackets and adjust that way.
With the Strait-Line you also have different chain hanger options like the Clamp On # RP58306 (which are only 2" wide) or the Bolt On # RP58305 if you are really pressed for room on top of your trailer tongue.
The only thing that you need in addition to the WD system is a hitch ball like the 2-5/16" # 19286.
