Troubleshooting Poor Braking Action on Trailer

Question:

So I just installed the new brakes 6 sets 12inch on my trailer. Also a new btake controller. I have the contraller turned up all the way, brakes adjusted to the point I can feel them catch a bit awhile free turning the wheel. But I still do not get the braking needed. The drums where the magnet rides are just a bit groved, not bad. Would that have something to do with it. Or is my voltage from wiring not efficient. Im lost

It sounds like you have your trailer brakes adjusted properly so checking the voltage from your brake controller is definitely the correct route to go. Start at the 7-Way plug on your tow vehicle and test the pin in the 5 o'clock position with a multimeter like part # PTW1714 to see if you are getting 12V power when you use the manual override on your controller with it set at the highest power setting.

If you don't get power at the 7-Way then the next step is to test the wiring from your 7-Way back to the brake controller to see where the voltage drops off. If you do get power then you will need to hook your trailer up to your tow vehicle and follow the same test procedure.

For any places where the wiring is damaged or needs to be replaced use 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 and Butt Connectors # DW05745-10.
