Can I Tow Jayco Fifth Wheel Trailer With 2013 Toyota Tundra

Question:

I have a 2013 Toyota Tundra 4x4 6-1/2ft bed pickup. I am considering buying a Jayco 26bhx fifth wheel that weighs 7355. Can I safely tow that and with which hitch?

I found the owner's manual for the 2013 Toyota Tundra and it depends on the engine and model if it can safely tow the Jayco. The empty weight of the Jayco is 7355 lbs but that does not include cargo. The Jayco fully loaded can weigh up to 9995 lbs according to the Jayco website. You want to take the VIN number to the dealership to see which model engine you have. Then check the owner's manual with your model code to see how much trailer weight Toyota recommends you tow.

If it turns out your engine is equipped to tow 9995 lbs, I recommend the Demco Hijacker part # DM8552020-71 for the rails and part # DM8550034 for the hitch. Since the Toyota Tundra is a short bed you need a sliding hitch for turning clearance with the fifth wheel. The Hijacker has an autoslide design that automatically slides back into place after you make a sharp turn. Other fifth wheel hitches require you to get out of the truck and re position the slider after making a sharp turn. I have attached an installation video for your reference.

If the Toyota Tundra has a factory 7-way, I recommend Bargman 5th wheel wiring harness part # 50-97-410. The 5th wheel wiring harness plugs inline with your factory 7-way and adds a 7-way plug in the bed of the truck for easier hook up with the fifth wheel. The 7-way at the rear of the truck remains functional with the fifth wheel wiring installed.
