Why Cant Rola Convoy 2 Bike Rack Be Used on Motorhome

Question:

The Rola Convoy 2 Bike Rack is not ratedinch for Motorhomes according to your site. This rack seems heavy duty, in fact it seems much more heavy duty than the comparable racks. What makes this rack not compatible. We have a small Class A Motorhome 25 ft. I dont understand why this carrier would not be good for this application?

We do have a nice selection of platform-style bike racks that are approved for use behind a motorhome but you are correct that the Rola Convoy is not rated for this application.

It's hard to say exactly what it is about the Convoy that makes it unsuitable for this particular use beyond the fact that the manufacturer decided that doing so could potentially cause damage. Since the ride is a lot rougher at the rear of an RV compared to that of a standard passenger vehicle (because the rear bumper is extended further out from the rear axle) a bike rack has to be specifically tested and rated to withstand the extra bounce and abuse that it will encounter.

Many times the hinged portion on the shank that allows certain carriers to tilt back or fold up (like on the Convoy) represent a weak point that the rough ride behind an RV can expose. I will say too that the Rola Convoy is very heavy at 82 pounds, even compared to other heavy-duty carriers, which could potentially cause issues when it's bouncing up and down on the highway.

For a similar platform rack that can handle heavier bikes that is rated for use behind an RV I recommend taking a look at the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HLY84FR. This is a really nice carrier that can safely secure 2 bikes that weigh up to 80 pounds each and its adjustable wheel cradles make for easy loading. A bike and hitch lock are also included to help protect your investments.

I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
