Why Are Some Trailer Couplers Rated Near 8,000 lbs Available for 2 inch and 2-5/16 inch Hitch Balls

Question:

Hello, I’m going to be purchasing a new trailer actuator for my boat trailer and had a question! I’m trying to choose between two different models you have! The first is the dm8608601 that is rated for 8600 pounds and 860lbs of tounge weight but uses a 2 inch ball! The second is the t4079200 that is rated for 8k lbs and 800 lbs of tongue weight and uses a 2/516 ball! Wondering why the unit that is rated for less weight uses. Bigger ball! Correct me if I’m wrong witch I very well may be but isint the larger diameter ball used for heavier weight applications? Thanks

Typically the larger hitch balls are used in the higher capacity applications, but there is a bit of overlap between the capacities of the 2 inch and 2-5/16 inch hitch balls which is right in the weight capacity range of the two actuators you mentioned. Around 8,000 lbs is where both sizes of hitch balls mentioned are easily within capacity. Above that is when you get into the larger hitch ball size-only territory.
