Recommended Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2019 Lexus NX 300h Over Class 1 or Class II Options
Question:
Lexus recommends class 1 and you recommend class 3. I will be using it for a Kuat bike rack. The rack fits class 2 or 3. Wondering why you recommend 3 over 1. Upside? Downside?

I recommend the Class III hitch because it is allows for a greater range of accessories. The difference between class III and class II hitches is the 2 inch opening compared to the 1-1/4 inch receiver tube opening. There are far more accessories and bike racks that fit a 2 inch hitch than the smaller 1-1/4 inch and because the shank inserted in the receiver is larger they are more stable and can support more weight.
The Class I hitches are basically a class II hitch with a shorter shank often due to a weld stop. This only allows for class I compatible accessories and is very limiting. For instance with a bike rack, a class I hitch cannot hold more than 2 bikes according to manufacturer restrictions even on a 4 bike rack that would work on a class II or higher hitch.
My recommendation for you is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13337. This is a strong hitch that will easily bolt right up to your 2009 Lexus NX 300h. The only downside is the receiver tube will sit slightly lower to the ground limiting your clearance by another inch.
This is compatible with all the styles of Kuat Bike racks. The benefit is that the NV like # NV22G can be expanded to 4 bikes if desired using # NA22G. The stability and strength of the Class III hitch will allow for this on your vehicle.
