Bolt-On 2-Inch A-Frame Ball Couplers

Question:

I lent my trailer to a friend and he figured the best way to hook it up was beat it with a hammer so my coupler is a little out of whack. It is a weld on and I was hoping I could cut the ball part off with a grinder and replace it with a bolt on. It is a 2inch ball. Could you sent me better drawings of some of your couplers and advise me if this is even possible. I have no way to weld on a new coupling. Thanks.

Helpful Expert Reply:

A high-capacity A-frame trailer coupler cannot have the ball coupler portion cut off and a new similar part bolted on. The result would be a reduced and unknown weight capacity; it is a sure thing that the repaired coupler would not have anything close to its original rating.

You can replace the welded-on A-frame coupler with a bolt on type but you'll have to have a welder completely remove the old unit from the trailer frame. We have three Demco bolt-on 2-inch ball couplers for A-frame trailers, the Demco # DM14793-52 that you referenced and two other versions, all shown on the linked page.
